After Joseph died, the rest of his family was no longer in favor with the Egyptians and they eventually became slaves for the next 400 years. But during that time while the children of Israel were suffering as slaves in Egypt, this family through whom God had promised to bless the world grew to several million people.
God’s promise to Abraham of many descendants had come true in a big way. Yet they were two million slaves, trapped in a foreign land. But God had not abandoned them. He reached out and saved the children of Israel. Through many incredible signs and miracles, God used Moses (one of Abraham’s descendants) to lead them to freedom. At one point God even parted the waters of the sea so they could escape from the Egyptians who were pursuing them.
During this time Abraham’s descendants became a mighty nation of people. God led them to the edge of the homeland He had promised them, and He gave them the Ten Commandments – special instructions about how to live in a loving relationship with Him and with others. These commandments would forever set them apart from the rest of the world so God could bless the world through them.
